I finally started to paint the hallway over the weekend. Like most everything, it's a little more involved than first anticipated. The prep time is what takes so long- laying down plastic, masking, filling in all the little holes and cracks, sanding the surfaces smooth, etc. I'd hoped to nearly finish it over the weekend, but I'm only about half-way done right now. I had a late nate out on Saturday night, which sidetracked me a little, and I watched the Broncos-Raiders game on Sunday. I'm not going to stress it- I'm taking my time.
I had hoped to go out of town next weekend for about 5 days, but I may stay home and get things done around the apartment. Whenever I take time off, I usually have some travel schedule to stick to. It would be nice just to have some time off, where I don't have to be somewhere at a certain time doing a certain thing. I'd like to have some simple free time, where I can do whatever I feel like that particular day.
I miss waking up and thinking about what I'd like to do that day. The 9 to 5 deal is not really me. Being your own boss is the way to go, if you can make it work. Of course, being your own boss presents a different set of challenges- both the risks and rewards are so much greater.
I definitely like the security my job provides, and I have to admit I enjoy what I do for the most part. I get to do graphic design, which I love, and I have a lot more lattitude than most designers. Working in the public education system, I can't be as creative as I'd like to be, but at least I feel like I'm making a small contribution to society. I couldn't really say that while contributing to Britney Spears' or some rapper's success at the record company in New York.
I'd like to get into teaching some day, though not for the noblest of reasons. I want summers off! What a gig.

That's quite a job that you have going for you, Eric! Being the detail-oriented person that you are, I know that doing a good job is very important to you. You couldn't do a half-assed job because everytime you would walk down the hallway, you would see the cracks and holes that should have been filled or the paint splatters here and there on the carpet. Am I right? I know this about you because I am the same way! One thing that I really respect about you is that you pay such close attention to detail and are so thorough in your work. I'm sure that the hallway will look incredible by the time that you're done with it. But I am glad to hear that you got sidetracked with a late night out and then the Broncos game on Sunday (not that you would miss that!). It sounds like you're taking your time and using your time well, or so it seems.
You know, teaching just might be the way to go for you, Eric. I could totally see you in the classroom. And one of the great things about teaching is that it would give you the two things that you want: time-off and a flexible schedule, assuming that you would be a college professor, of course. Imagine what it would be like to teach only in the afternoons or at night, to be able to plan your schedule around your life? And then imagine all of the young... Man! My mind just went blank. I totally forgot what I was about to say. I guess that you'll have to fill in the blanks for me.
But seriously, teaching may be a very good option for you. I just hope that you would be close enough so that I could take one of your classes! ha
Attention to detail is important- I know you feel exactly the same way. Plus, it's nice to take pride in what you do, no matter how basic or simple the task. I'm not sure the hallway is going to look beautiful (there are still some kinda funky things about it), but it will definitely be an improvement.
This talk of home improvement reminds me- how are your dining room chairs coming along? Did you finish them? I know you're taking the time to do them right as well.
I was hoping that my job at the college would lead to a teaching job here, but they are not in need of design teachers. I'm going to speak with some people here about it; if a position opens up one day, I'd like to try it. Oh, and if I imagine teaching and the students I would have...I might go blank, too.
bebe, you have a big deal with the apartament, I´d like to help you but I´m here!!!
