Blog Post #19

It's a cool, rainy day here in Southern California. It's more fresh and gray than cold and gloomy, but that could change. We're supposedly in for an entire weekend of rain. I was hoping to do some running and biking, but that looks improbable right now.

I mentioned in a previous post a local L.A. public radio station called KPFK. They call themselves "progressive and independent", but "radically leftist" is more accurate a description. I listen to it once in awhile, just to get some socialist perspective on things. It's often amusing, sometimes disturbing, always biased, ocasionally informative and generally dogmatic. It's definitely required listening for those who think of themselves as victims in our society.

Anyway, the station recently had a contest to come up with a new slogan. Their slogan had been "Fiercely Independent", and they asked listeners to submit ideas for a new one. I submitted the following list of new slogan ideas:

• Fiercely Anti-American

Hasta la Victoria Siempre!

Inventing Victims Since 1959

The Voice of the Opressed American

Bush is a Big Meanie

Chomsky is God

Just Slightly To the Left of Marxism

Like Jane Fonda, Before She Sold Out

Forty-seven Years of Whining

KPFK- Mao and Forever

Your Morning Cup of Misery

We're Victims, Too!

Fiercely Independent. No, Wait- Dependent on the Government for Everything.

Still Fighting Whitey!

Strangely, they didn't respond. I guess they just didn't see the humor there.

I mentioned in my last post that I went to Santa Ana last weekend, and I posted some photos from that afternoon. I'd like to add a few more here, which may or may not be interesting to anyone but myself. I sometimes like to take photos with an emphasis on the graphics in photographics. I like the shapes, composition and textures I see in the everyday things around us. I have moments where I really see the graphic elements in the most innocuous things, and I really enjoy composing an image. So, thanks for indulging me...

Hey Eric
It's me again, what station is KPFK on?
You should check out NPR and tell me what you think.

Faryal- I listen to NPR sometimes, which is on a few few public stations. I definitely like 89.9 KCRW the most; it's probably the best station in LA. It's especially reknowned for its music selection.

KPFK is 90.7. But be careful, we don't need you to go even further to the left. ;)

Eric-

I like the slogan possibilities. Hmm, I wonder why they didn't respond.

There are certainly many wires coming in and out of that electric box for the first picture. Is that your apartment?

Ryan- those wires are part of an old apartment building in Santa Ana. It has kind of a rustic charm, don't you think?

You came up with some pretty clever slogans, Eric! No wonder you are a designer! Some of my favorites of the bunch are:

--Just Slightly To the Left of Marxism
--Like Jane Fonda, Before She Sold Out
--KPFK- Mao and Forever

Funny stuff man! It's a shame that they didn't recognize you for your ingenuity this time but I'm sure that your slogans got a couple of chuckles in the board meeting--right, left or left of left, funny is funny.

It's cool to see what kinds of things catch your eye, Eric. Thanks for sharing your photos. Nice compositions, colors, and textures for sure. I'd like to see more of your graphic art/ photography the next time I go over to your place... and maybe even some wedding stuff, too? I've never seen any of that...
