Last Friday night was my mom's retirement party. She worked at Nogales High School for 26 years, and has earned the well-deserved opportunity to spend her time however she wants to. I know she's going to enjoy her new freedom, and that she'll stay active and experience many new places and things.
A lot of people showed up to her party, many of whom who had left Nogales years ago. But they made a point of saying farewell in person, which says a lot. A number of people spoke, and they said very nice things about her. It was easy to see that she was a well-respected and loved friend and co-worker. She's an awesome lady, a great mom, and I'm proud of her. Congratulations, Mom- you deserve it.

Lay down those '50s tracks, and watch out!
Learning a few old school moves from the source.

There were some lovely parting gifts, including a weekend for two in Cambria.
On Sunday afternoon, I hung out for awhile in downtown Santa Ana. It's become an almost completely Mexican area, full of taquerias, street vendors and all kinds of Mexican businesses. It seems most of Southern California is a "Mexican area" these days, but Santa Ana is especially saturated and there's a very authentic vibe in the air. I think it's due in large part to the fact that most of the people there seem to be recent immigrants, as opposed to areas like East L.A., which has a more unsettling, Cholo/gangbanger element to it.
There is a part of downtown which is designated as the Artists Village, which provides a sharp contrast with it's galleries, studio lofts and hip eatieries like Memphis and the Gypsy Den. Downtown Santa Ana is registered in the National Register of Historical Places, and it's a great place to enjoy the architecture of many old buildings which are still in use.

Dude, you really do have the ultimate all-American family. Everybody is so close and involved in each other's lives--the way it should be but too often is not--and on top of that, everybody is so good-looking! Ward, June, Wally, and Lisa! ha Farah and I were talking about your mom and saying that we both think that she is really pretty... So good for her that she gets to start a new chapter in life that doesn't include work! I'm sure that it'll be an adjustment for her now that she has all of this time on her hands but if she is anything like you I'm sure that she'll use her time well experiencing new places and new things, just like you said. Cambria might be a good start! And maybe since your dad is not a big traveler you can go on some mother-son trips to Europe?!
I had no idea that Santa Ana had an artist district type place. I have always thought of Santa Ana as more along the lines of the TJ of Orange County. We'll have to go there sometime. I'd really like to check out that Memphis place one of these days and revisit the Gypsy Den. Farah and I went to the one at The Lab in Costa Mesa but had no idea that there was one in Santa Ana.
Nice pics, Eric.
Great pics as always.
Wow, Nogales high school. Orale. Rowland and Nogales were always rivals and Nogales seemed to be known for being a bit rougher. Glad to hear your Mom is retired. What a great thing. Maybe I'll retire soon....
Ryan,
Nogales being a bit "rougher" is a nice way to put it.
Cory,
I guess we are a pretty typical American family. Thanks for the compliments- I'm sure Ward and June will appreciate them!
Your mention of Memphis made me realize I forgot to post one other photo, which I've now added.
The next time you guys are down here and have time, we can check out the area and hang out there a bit.
Hey Eric
Wow, I just wanted to say that you have a beautiful family. Your mom and sister are gorgeous . What happened to you? J/K. Great looking family :)
Faryal,
I can't help it if you're more into women than men. Ha!
Thanks for writing- let's talk soon.
Eric!
That was suppose to be a secret. So now that the secret is out, can you please introduce me to a beautiful, exotic, and smart chick? ;) Have a good weekend.
Another thanks for posting my retirement celebration. I really did have a good time. I'm liking your friends more and more!!!! Thank them for the nice compliments.
At looking at the other photos I particularily notice the mosaic from the shoe store. Do any of you youngsters know who the boy and dog are and what the advertising saying that went with it was? Till later. Mom
