Most of us think of Memorial Day as simply a three-day weekend- an opportunity to take off for Vegas, Ensenada, Palm Springs, the beach, etc. It's a good excuse to have a barbecue or go to the mall for holiday sales. But let us remember that this day was created to honor and remember those Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we can live as the freest people on Earth. Those who gave their lives so that we could enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness deserve to be remembered and appreciated by all of us. We so often take for granted this freedom we enjoy on a daily basis.
We are obligated as Americans to stop, think, and be grateful for those who came before us, and those who continue to risk and sometimes give their lives so we can remain free. Without them, we would be bowing to the British Crown, shining our jackboots or be virtual prisoners to the hammer and sickle. The world would not know democracy. We need to be conscious of this, and be eternally grateful for those we should all be honoring on this important day.
This holiday weekend provided an opportunity to spend time with friends and family. The photos that follow are just a few images from a beautiful weekend...

First off, I have to agree with you in saying that it really was a nice breeze we saw at Venice Beach! ;) Great capture, Eric. And keeping with the theme of all things nice, man, what a great bar-be-que you and your folks had! Just as you said, Eric, Memorial Day is a day to reflect on those who came before us, and oh how you did that in style! The food looks incredible!! Is that duck? I really wish that we could have reflected with you and your family instead of making the trip up north with ham and salami sandwiches! It would have been nice to meet your everybody too. Hopefully one of these days we can all get together... Anyway, great pics, as usual. Love the portrait shots and the panning shot of the home flock! Very nice!
Good post. Yeah, I need to get an American Flag for the house so I can hang it on these important holidays. I was just thinking about that today in fact.
Cory- no, nothing quite as exotic as duck. Just plain ol' chicken, albeit delicious chicken. And yes, one of these days we'll get together and you can see my parents' place, and the infamous pigeons.
Ryan- I like the flag idea. Someday when I have my own house, Old Glory will definitely fly on important occasions.
